Agentic Google Search: What Australian Businesses Should Do Now
Agentic Google Search changes how a buyer can research, compare and shortlist businesses across an extended conversation.
At Google I/O 2026, Google described a Search experience that can answer follow-up questions and use information agents to monitor topics in the background. That changes the business problem. A buyer may ask an assistant to research a need, compare options and return later with a shortlist. Your website still matters, but the first explanation of your business may happen before the visit.
This is the practical meaning of the first ten lessons in my New Internet series. It is a planning framework for owners and marketing leaders who want to prepare with evidence, and no single markup tag can make an AI agent recommend a business.
Quick Answer: What Is Agentic Google Search?
Agentic Google Search is Google’s direction toward a conversational experience that can continue research on a user’s behalf. Businesses should make their offer, evidence and next step clear across every relevant page. No business can buy or guarantee an AI recommendation.
Who Is Agentic Google Search Preparation For?
This playbook is for Australian business owners, marketing leaders and in-house teams whose customers compare providers before enquiring. It is particularly useful when a site earns impressions but the service pages do not explain the offer or convert interest into qualified conversations.
What Is Changing in Agentic Google Search?
Google introduced an intelligent AI-powered Search box, follow-up conversations from AI Overviews into AI Mode and information agents that can keep researching a topic. These are Google’s stated product direction; their availability and behaviour can vary by market and over time. Do not assume every Australian buyer already uses every feature.
My interpretation is that discovery is moving from a single query and list of pages toward a longer sequence: problem, explanation, comparison and action. The opportunity is to make your business a clear, credible option at each stage.
1. Explain the business before optimising for it
Ask a person unfamiliar with your company to read your homepage and answer four questions: What do you do? Who is it for? Which problem do you solve? Why should someone believe you? Then check whether your service pages answer the same questions without contradicting the homepage.
For a clinic, that means specific services, practitioners, locations and appropriate evidence. For a B2B consultant, it means scope, process, experience and examples. For an online store, it means usable product details, availability, delivery and return information. Clear information helps people first; it also gives search systems something accurate to retrieve and explain.
2. Build Pages for Decisions in Agentic Google Search
A buyer rarely asks only “SEO.” They ask whether to hire a consultant or agency, what an audit includes, how long work takes, what evidence supports a claim and what it costs. Give each distinct decision a useful home. A service page should explain the offer and next step. A comparison article should help someone choose. A case study should show a real problem, action and result with your role stated plainly.
Publishing near-identical pages for every variation of “AI SEO GEO” makes the site harder to navigate and harder to maintain. Map one primary intent to each page and link related questions together. Google’s guidance for generative AI features continues to emphasise the foundations of accessible, useful content.
3. Make proof easy to verify
AI can summarise a claim, but a buyer still needs to trust it. Name the person responsible for advice. Explain the work behind a result and distinguish your contribution from a team outcome. Show the method, constraints and date when they matter. Support claims with relevant case studies, credentials, customer feedback and independent references that you have permission to use.
My TLC Method starts with technical access, then links and authority, then content that answers the customer’s real questions. The order prevents a business from producing articles while important pages remain hard to discover or unconvincing to buyers. The method is a way to prioritise work in a defensible order.
4. Check the path from answer to action
Imagine an agent or a person arriving on an article rather than your homepage. Is the author clear? Does the article link to the relevant service, case study or contact route? Can someone understand what happens after making contact? Test the page on a phone and follow the path yourself.
If a buyer asks for a supplier, vague thought leadership alone is insufficient. The commercial page needs to be specific about who you help, what you deliver and how an engagement begins. If a buyer asks a general question, lead with a useful answer, then offer one relevant next step.
The TLC Method for Agentic Google Search
Tech: Make the right pages accessible
Check canonical URLs, crawl access, mobile usability and the information rendered on each important service page. A technically eligible page gives search systems an opportunity to find it; it does not guarantee a citation.
Links: Connect evidence and reputation
Link a service to its supporting case studies and relevant explanations. Seek accurate independent references and consistent professional profiles that reflect real work.
Content: Answer the decision
Publish a useful answer to each distinct buying question, with the service page as the commercial destination. Update it when your offer or evidence changes.
How Does Agentic Google Search Choose a Business?
Agentic Google search chooses a business by gathering information from pages it can access, comparing options against the request and presenting a next step, such as a booking or an enquiry. Google has not published a ranking formula for these agent features, so the safest assumption is that the same foundations used for Search still apply.
Google states that the best practices for SEO remain relevant for its AI features, and that there are no extra requirements to appear in them beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet (Google Search Central). For agentic Google search, that means clear service pages, accurate business details, visible pricing or pricing guidance where possible and a simple contact or booking path.
In my client work, the businesses best placed for agentic Google search are the ones whose websites already answer the questions a sales rep would answer on a first call. When an agent can confirm the service, the location, the likely cost and the next step without guessing, the business becomes an easier recommendation.

5. Measure the Right Outcomes
Track relevant Search queries and service-page impressions in Search Console. Review Google’s generative-feature impressions by page where the report is available. Separately sample actual AI answers for brand mentions, citations and accuracy. Then measure suitable enquiries and proposals. These are different metrics and should remain separate.
My AI search visibility measurement guide gives a repeatable scorecard. A rise in impressions from unrelated informational pages is not the same as increased demand for your service.
A 90-Day Agentic Google Search Sequence
- Days 1 to 30: audit crawl access, important service pages, buyer questions, evidence and conversion routes. Establish the Search and AI-answer baseline.
- Days 31 to 60: fix the clearest commercial-page gaps, publish one strong answer for each priority decision and connect it to the correct offer and proof.
- Days 61 to 90: earn relevant independent references, improve the pages that attract qualified impressions, and compare enquiries against the baseline.
The point of agentic Search is not that every business needs 35 new blog posts. It is that a buyer’s research can happen across more steps and surfaces. Build a site that accurately explains your expertise and makes the next step obvious wherever the journey starts.

Why I Prioritise Proof for Agentic Google Search
I would prioritise the pages that explain a commercial decision and the evidence that supports them. The TLC Method keeps the response practical: make the correct pages accessible, connect them to independent proof and write each answer so it remains useful when retrieved outside its original context.
Who Agentic Google Search Preparation Is Not For
This work is unsuitable for businesses seeking guaranteed recommendations or another reason to publish overlapping pages. A company with an unclear offer, inaccessible service pages or unsupported claims should fix those foundations first.
Agentic Google Search Priority Table
| Priority | Buyer need | Page type | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Understand | What the business does | Service page | Scope and audience |
| Compare | Which option fits | Decision guide | Trade-offs and limits |
| Trust | Why the claim is credible | Case study or author page | Attributed result |
| Act | What happens next | Service or contact page | Clear process |
How to Prepare for Agentic Google Search in 5 Steps
- Map the distinct questions in the buyer journey.
- Assign one primary page to each important intent.
- Repair access, canonical and mobile problems.
- Connect services, evidence, author identity and next actions.
- Measure search visibility, sampled answers and enquiries separately.

Frequently Asked Questions About Agentic Google Search
Does agentic Search make traditional SEO obsolete?
No. Google says eligibility for AI features depends on foundational Search requirements. Crawlable, helpful pages remain the starting point, while a business also needs clear evidence and an understandable offer.
How soon will a business appear in AI answers?
There is no fixed timetable or guaranteed placement. Establish a baseline for relevant queries and sampled answers, improve the underlying pages and review qualified enquiries over time.
Should we publish a page for every AI search phrase?
Only when it answers a distinct decision. A cluster of overlapping pages can confuse readers and dilute maintenance effort; strengthen one authoritative page and link related questions to it.
Does agentic search require a new file or plugin?
No single file or plugin guarantees inclusion. Start with accessible pages, accurate business information, strong evidence and a clear route from answer to action.
How should Australian businesses test agentic search?
Use a stable set of real buyer questions, record the date and market context, and compare the answers with Search performance and qualified enquiries over time.
