GEO Audit: What to Check Before You Invest in AI Search
A GEO audit is a structured review of whether AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity can find, understand, trust and cite your business. It should happen before you fund a generative engine optimisation retainer, because it shows what to fix first, why it matters and how you will know the work helped.
Many business owners I speak with sense that their marketing is working harder than the results suggest, and they are being told AI visibility is the missing piece. This guide is for owners and marketing leaders in Australia who want a clear baseline before they spend. It explains what a GEO audit should check, how I run one and what the output should look like.
Quick Answer: What Is a GEO Audit?
A GEO audit is a diagnosis of how visible, clear and credible your business is to AI search tools, completed before any optimisation spend. It reviews technical access, proof of expertise, buyer-question content and a repeatable sample of AI mentions. The result is a prioritised roadmap with owners and measures, so every dollar has a reason.

Why I Start Every GEO Audit With the Commercial Offer
I start every GEO audit with the offer, the buyer and the enquiry, because AI visibility only has value when it leads a qualified person to the right service. In 22 years of marketing, the most expensive mistakes I have seen came from optimising for attention before anyone agreed what a good customer looked like.
So the first session answers five questions. What are you selling? Who is the right buyer? Which problem triggers the search? What proof would make that buyer trust you? What does a successful enquiry look like? A prompt-tracking dashboard that skips those questions can report rising mentions while revenue stays flat.
From there, I map each main buyer question to one primary page. The homepage introduces the business, a service page explains an engagement, a case study shows evidence and an article answers a specific decision. When two pages compete for the same question, AI tools and search engines receive a mixed signal, and the audit flags it for consolidation.
What Should a GEO Audit Check?
A GEO audit should check three layers that I group under my TLC Method: Tech, Links and Content. Each layer answers a different question about whether an AI system can retrieve a page, verify the business behind it and lift a useful answer from it.
Tech: Can Important Pages Compete?
The technical layer of a GEO audit inspects crawl access, canonical destinations, indexation, mobile usability, rendering and conversion tracking. Google states that pages shown as supporting links in AI Overviews and AI Mode must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet, with no extra technical requirement (Google Search Central). A page that cannot be retrieved needs fixing before another batch of articles.
Links: Can Buyers and AI Tools Verify the Business?
The links layer reviews the About page, author attribution, case studies, consistent business profiles and relevant independent references. I check whether each result has a clear period, context and role. A mention on a credible, relevant site is worth more to a GEO audit than a long list of generic directory citations.
Content: Are the Buying Questions Answered?
The content layer looks for missing comparisons, objections and explanations, then consolidates overlapping pages. Google’s guidance on helpful content asks whether a page demonstrates first-hand expertise and leaves the reader satisfied (Google Search Central). The goal is a body of knowledge that makes the business easy to understand and quote.
How to Run a GEO Audit in 7 Steps
A GEO audit follows seven steps, from commercial goals to a dated roadmap. For a small or mid-sized business, the full process usually takes two to three weeks of elapsed time.
- Define the commercial goal. Agree on the services, buyers and enquiry types that matter most, and record current lead quality.
- Build the query-to-page map. List the real questions buyers ask and assign one primary page to each.
- Check technical access. Review indexation, canonicals, rendering, speed, structured data and tracking in Search Console and a crawler.
- Review proof and entity clarity. Confirm the business name, people, location and results are consistent across the site and profiles.
- Sample AI answers. Run a fixed set of buyer prompts in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, and record mentions, citations and named competitors with the date and location.
- Score the gaps. Rate each gap by business value, effort and dependency, so the order of work is defensible.
- Deliver the 30/60/90-day roadmap. Assign owners, measures and review dates, and separate in-house tasks from specialist work.
GEO Audit vs SEO Audit: What Is the Difference?
A GEO audit builds on an SEO audit and adds a layer for how AI tools represent and cite the business. The two overlap heavily, because the technical and content foundations are shared, as the table shows.
| Area | SEO Audit | GEO Audit |
|---|---|---|
| Main goal | Rank pages in search results | Be mentioned and cited in AI answers |
| Surfaces reviewed | Google, Bing, Brave | AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity |
| Technical checks | Crawl, index, speed, canonicals | The same checks, plus rendering and structured facts |
| Content checks | Keywords, intent, depth | Answer-first passages, evidence, quotable statements |
| Authority checks | Backlinks | Backlinks plus brand mentions and entity consistency |
| Measurement | Rankings, clicks, conversions | Prompt samples, citations, qualified enquiries |
How Do You Measure AI Visibility in a GEO Audit?
A GEO audit measures AI visibility with two sources: Search Console data for Google and a repeatable prompt sample for other AI tools. Google reports traffic from AI features inside the Web search type of the Search Console Performance report, so those clicks are counted with ordinary search (Google Search Central).
ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity do not share an equivalent report. For those tools, I use a fixed set of realistic buyer prompts, then record whether the business appears, whether a source is cited and which competitors are named. A manual sample is directional, and I label it that way in every report. My guide on how to measure AI search visibility explains the scorecard in detail.
The final measure is commercial. I record qualified enquiries, their source where known, the service requested and the sales outcome. If impressions rise while suitable conversations do not, the next fix may be offer clarity or conversion rather than another visibility tactic.

Who Is a GEO Audit For?
A GEO audit suits businesses whose buyers research with AI tools before they make contact, and who want evidence before committing to a retainer.
Service Businesses and Professional Firms
Consultants, clinics, law firms and trades benefit when buyers ask AI tools for recommendations by location or problem. A GEO audit shows whether the firm is named and which competitors appear instead.
Ecommerce and Product Brands
Product brands benefit when shoppers ask AI tools to compare options. The audit checks whether product pages carry the specifications, proof and policies an AI answer needs. My checklist for AI-ready product pages covers that layer.
Marketing Leaders Planning a Budget
Marketing managers use a GEO audit to decide whether to fund technical repairs, content, authority building or ongoing leadership first, and to defend that order internally.
Who a GEO Audit Is Not For
A GEO audit is a poor fit for a business without a clear offer, a working website or capacity to act on the findings. In those cases, positioning and a basic site should come first.

Frequently Asked Questions About a GEO Audit
How much does a GEO audit cost in Australia?
A GEO audit in Australia usually costs less than one month of a GEO retainer, and the price depends on site size, the number of services and how many AI tools are sampled. A fixed-scope audit with a written roadmap is easier to compare than an open-ended hourly engagement.
How long does a GEO audit take?
Most GEO audits for small and mid-sized businesses take two to three weeks from kickoff to roadmap. Larger sites with many service lines or locations take longer, mainly because the query-to-page map and prompt sampling grow with the offer.
Can a GEO audit guarantee AI citations?
No audit can guarantee AI citations. A GEO audit establishes a baseline and identifies changes within your control. Each AI platform decides which sources appear for a query, and those answers change over time.
Should I buy a GEO retainer straight after the audit?
Buy a retainer only if the roadmap shows enough ongoing work, a capable owner and a commercial reason to keep investing. Some businesses need a focused repair first, while others need months of coordinated content and authority work.
Can my team run a GEO audit in-house?
An in-house team can run parts of a GEO audit, such as prompt sampling and Search Console review. The harder parts are prioritisation and entity diagnosis, where outside experience helps avoid spending on the wrong fix.
What To Do Next
A GEO audit gives you a baseline, a query-to-page map and a prioritised roadmap before you commit budget to AI search. It protects you from paying for visibility tactics that never reach a qualified buyer.
